"wearing shoes" was an art show I had around the same time the Quiet City Two in the Morning book was being released, i.e. toward the end of my time at university. I put cheap carnations in little vases on tables throughout the gallery, trying to make a real sad, ironic, abortive attempt at warmth. The carnations were like a diner with plastic flowers or a hotel room with watercolor prints screwed into the wall so it looks like home. The gallery curators, mostly university students, did not understand this idea and kept replacing the flowers when they died. Dead flowers would have been beyond perfect. In a way, though, I was OK with this, because I just kept stealing the new flowers and giving them to my girlfriend. On opening night the little gallery was packed tight with people, new friends and old, and Talking Heads played in the background, obviously.
